Casper vs. Lull

Overview

Casper is the most popular online mattress in a box company and has made great strides in disrupting the mattress industry sales model. Since their launch almost 2 years ago, many new online mattress companies have come on the scene. A recent entrant, Lull, has raised the bar in terms of feel and quality. Not sure if a Casper is right for you? Keep reading to learn why the Lull might be the better option.

Top Cover

Casper:

Made from premium textiles from the USA and Belgium, the fully removable cover is breathable, flexible, and resilient. This cover is a minimalist design with no pattern or real texture to it.

Lull:

Lull’s cover is made of ultra-premium fabrics sourced in North and South Carolina. The surface is made from polyester and rayon to provide comfort, stretch and flexibility. It is hand crafted in Illinois and easily removable for spot cleaning. The Lull fire barrier is composed of rayon cellulose fiber blended with fine-grained sand and a small amount of polyester which, in combination, is inherently fire resistant. These covers breathe well and I’m giving a nod to Lull for sourcing their product in the USA.

Top Layer

Casper:

Casper uses open cell latex foam as their top layer. This provides both breathability and bounce. If you’re looking for a little bounce in your mattress, then you may want to consider the Casper.

Lull:

Lull has a 1.5″ gel-infused, viscoelastic memory foam top layer. The gel keeps you cool and the memory foam will do a better job of contouring to your body and providing pressure relief.

Middle Layer

Casper:

Casper has a layer of high density foam beneath the latex that will help with pressure relief. I think the effect Casper wanted to achieve was bounciness and contouring but this ends up being a bit firmer than I prefer.

Lull:

Lull has  a 1.5″ transition layer that utilizes a proprietary blend of premium foam. This transition layer works with the top layer and bottom layer to give the mattress a consistent feel. It also prevents you from sinking in too far into the mattress and aids in helping the mattress recover faster when changing positions.

Base Layer

Casper has a 6.5″ base layer while the Lull has a 7″ base layer. Although not a huge difference, that extra half inch is extra insurance you won’t bottom out while sleeping on the mattress.

Bounce

Casper is the winner here if you’re looking for bounce. The top latex layer will spring back into shape quickly. However a trade off is more motion transfer between you and your partner.

Delivery

Both offer fast and free delivery and both have a generous 100 night trial where if you aren’t satisfied you can return it for a full refund. In this respect they are a tie.

With Casper If you live in  NYC or San Francisco you can free courier delivery within a 1 hour window so slight advantage to Casper here.

Warranty

Both offer a standard 10 year warranty.

Final Verdict

If you want a mattress that is on the firmer end of the spectrum and has some bounce to it, go with the Casper. If you are looking for a mattress that will conform to your body, alleviate pressure points and limit motion transfer, go with the Lull. It has a great balance of foam densities to make it one of my favorite mattresses. I find it very close in feel to the Tempurpedic Breeze which I recently reviewed. However it is much less expensive.
