The Casper Mattress Review

I hate it when I can’t find good information about an expensive product I want to buy. That’s why I created this site and that’s why I’m also going to give you, the consumer as much information as I can about my experience. Hope you enjoy.

My Casper mattress arrived this week and below are my findings. Casper mattress was the first on the scene among these new start-up mattress companies and they helped to revolutionize the way mattresses are sold. They have an almost cult like following among millennials who have latched on to disruptive business models that eliminate unnecessary costs.

Ordering

Ordering the Casper Mattress is similar to the Yogabed or Leesa ordering process. Simply go to the website, choose your size and then enter your credit card info and address. Your bed is shipped to your doorstep and all you have to do is bring it to your bedroom. Their return process is very generous just like Yogabed, Leesa and Tuft&Needle. They offer a 100 day trial window and if you aren’t satisfied they will arrange to pick up the mattress at your house. There’s really no reason not to give this mattress a try. Especially when  you consider it’s a choice you will be living with for many years.

Unboxing

Uboxing the Casper Mattress is basically the same experience as unboxing the YogaBed, Tuft&Needle and Leesa Mattress.

Note that the Casper box is slightly bigger than a YogaBed, Leesa or Tuft&Needle box. Not sure why since all 3 mattresses are roughly the same in terms of thickness.

Inside the box you will find a cool little bag with instructions and more.

The bag includes a nice welcome message from the founder, a tool to cut open the packaging and instructions on how to setup and clean the Capser Mattress. The top cover is actually removable. There’s a zipper underneath the mattress that removes the cover and you can then throw in the washing machine.

The Casper sprung into shape in less the 3 minutes and was ready to sleep on!

Here’s a detailed picture of the 3 layers of the Casper mattress. The top layer is latex, middle layer memory foam and bottom layer is foam. Almost all these new mattress startups contain 3 layers. You can just about dismiss the first hard foam layer at the bottom because that’s really not going to affect feel unless it’s extremely cheap material. The Casper gets some bounce from its top latex layer. Latex will feel a bit firmer than memory foam or a foam/gel combo. If you want something softer, check out my other reviews.

Casper Bowling Ball Test

Bowling ball on Casper mattress

I put my 14 lb. bowling ball on the Casper mattress to measure how much give it has. As you can see it has  a generous amount of give to it. It’s more forgiving than its competitor, Tuft & Needle. But again, this is a personal preference. If you enjoy bouncing on your mattress, the Casper is your mattress. If you like more of a traditional memory foam feel get the Tuft.

Here’s another perspective of my bowling ball on the Casper Mattress.

Check out this Casper video with a 14 lb. bowling ball. It has some respectable bounce! That’s because of the top layer of latex. This will give you the benefits of some bounce with minimal motion transfer. So you get all the best of  Tempurpedic with memory foam but also the benefits of a traditional inner spring mattress without the motion transfer and pressure points.

Many people have asked if the Casper sleeps hot. It doesn’t. Here’s a infrared video taken that illustrates the heat retention on the Casper:

Overall I rate this a good mattress. If you like a bed that is somewhat firm, go with this. It’s not as firm as the Tuft&Needle but not as soft as the YogaBed or Leesa mattress.

If you want a mattress that is more substantial, contours better to your  body and has an overall better feel with much less off gassing, I strongly recommend the Alexander Signature Select from Nest Bedding. They are one of my favorite companies and they make amazing mattresses with excellent customer service.  Check out the full review HERE.

Casper sells the most mattresses of all the mattresses I have reviewed so far. However they also have a massive advertising budget compared to the others as well.  Bed in a box startups are finally getting the recognition they deserve.  They recently made news when it was revealed that celebrities like Leonardo Di Caprio and others invested in a recent round of Casper funding.

UPDATE 1-20-16

Many new mattress companies have emerged since Casper came on the scene. With that I think the quality has also improved.  Many people have complained that the Casper is too firm for their taste. If you want a mattress that will be supportive and will contour better to your body thus relieving pressure points, check out my Lull Mattress Review. It is about the same as Casper in terms of cost but sleeps cooler and feels like a luxury mattress. It was recently featured on the Today Show as well.

At the very least, check out the new mattress in a box companies that have come online since Casper.

Thanks for the post, Dylan. I note which mattresses I found to have the most off gassing in my reviews. The Nest Bedding Mattresses don’t smell nearly as bad as Tuft & Needle and Casper. Another one that doesn’t have much off gassing at all is Brooklyn Bedding.

Is the Casper mattress a truly magnificent mattress to sleep on?

    1. Editor

It’s a good mattress but I would check out some of their competitors listed on this site to see if it truly is right for you. There isn’t a “one size fits all” type mattress. There’s just too much variation in preference.

I have a friend who just bought a Casper, and it looks pretty basic. I’m considering a Luxi mattress and wondered how they compare?

I really like the Luxi for its versatility. You can configure it for 3 different levels of firmness so chances are you will find a firmness level that’s right for you without having to try out and return multiple mattresses. Plus if you firmness preferences change over time the Luxi can be adjusted.
