Casper vs. Tuft and Needle, What’s right for you?

I was given both the Tuft and Needle and Casper mattress free to review.

The Tuft and Needle mattress is starting to become a popular alternative to the Casper mattress. But to give you a sense of scale, below is a Google Trends chart that shows just how dominant Casper is in the online mattress space.

The blue line is Casper and the red line is Tuft and Needle. As you can see, Casper started a bit earlier and they were one of the first in the online mattress in a box space to really market their product aggressively. But, you can also see that Tuft and Needle is picking up steam.

So, which one should you buy?

I’ve created a side by side comparison below to help you make the most informed decision between these two mattresses.

Ordering and Unboxing

Both of these companies have very simple ordering processes. In fact you can complete the order as fast as ordering something off amazon. Both mattresses ship quickly, usually within a week and arrive at your doorstep in a box. You get tracking with both companies so you can anticipate when to move your old bed and when you can start sleeping on your new one.

Here’s a video of me unboxing my Tuft and Needle Mattress. Its the same process as the Casper mattress. As you can see it sort of inflates like a marshmallow after you squish it. Doesn’t take much time at all.

Some readers have been concerned about off gassing with the Casper and Tuft and Needle mattresses. They both emit an odor that eventually dissipates but I did notice that the Tuft and Needle mattress had less of a chemical smell than the Casper.

How do they Sleep?

The Tuft & Needle mattress is slightly firmer than the Casper mattress. These mattresses also have more give than a typical memory foam mattress. What I mean by that is that you don’t feel like you have to dig yourself out of it in the middle of the night because your body formed an impression. Instead these mattresses bounce back into shape fairly quickly. Again I would say that the Leesa has a bit more bounce to it.

Here’s some videos of me bouncing my bowling ball on the mattresses.

Here’s picture of the insides of both mattresses.

CASPER

TUFT & NEEDLE

Notice that the Tuft & Needle only has 2 layers of foam instead of 3. That’s not a bad thing though. This mattress sleeps cooler than the Casper and a big reason for that is that each layer requires a layer of glue as well which traps heat.

Both of these mattresses measure about 10 inches high. The Tuft and Needle picture is a little deceiving since some of the mattress is covered by the bed frame.

Softness

This picture gives you a sense of how soft the Casper mattress is.

Here’s a picture of the same bowling ball on the Tuft and Needle mattress.

The Tuft and Needle mattress has less give to it which is ideal for stomach and back sleepers.

Price

As you can see, the Tuft and Needle has the Casper mattress beat on price.

Casper

Twin XL: $600

Queen: $850

CA King: $950

Tuft & Needle

CONSUMER REPORTS FINDINGS

Consumer Reports rated the Tuft and Need and Casper in their top 5 memory foam products which beat out Tempurpedic by far! The Tuft & Needle actually ranked higher than Casper overall but that doesn’t mean that Tuft&Needle is necessarily better.

Conclusion

When making your final choice, make sure you know what kind of sleeper you are. If you are a stomach sleeper like myself, I would recommend Tuft&Needle. If you are a back sleeper, go with the Casper. Either of these mattresses is great for a side sleeper.  And remember, if you aren’t satisfied, both of these companies stand by their product and will let you return it hassle free, no questions asked.

As always, please contact me with additional questions and I will get back to you in a few hours.
