Brentwood Home Oceano Mattress Review

I recently received a free Oceano mattress for review. This is one of 300 or so mattresses that I have been given since starting Sleep On It Now. The quality of the material that you get for the price is outstanding. With the Oceano, Brentwood has brought the online mattress space to new highs. I have tried other spring mattresses including the Duxiana which can cost up to $10,000 and I actually prefer the Oceano. Read on to learn why.

Upon unboxing there is a product brochure that highlights some of the bedding accessories you can also purchase from Brentwood Home. I really like their linen blanket which is perfect for Spring and Fall.

Below is a video that gives an overview of the mattress. It comes in a box that is delivered to your door via UPS or FedEx. No need to give up a chunk of your day waiting for a truck to arrive.

Specifications of the Oceano Mattress

This is not a simple 3 layer foam mattress. It is a sophisticated system that gives you that luxurious feel which is rare right now in boxed mattresses. Below are the specifications:

• Medium feel. Belgian 4-way stretch knit with a spacious, pillowy quilt design lined with New Zealand wool that wicks away moisture, keeps your mattress smelling fresh, and acts as a natural fire barrier
• 4-inch top pocket of 1353 individually wrapped micro coils provide comfort and support
• Contouring layer of gel memory foam offers pressure relief and spinal support while the 796 individually wrapped base coils sit in 5 zones to support every inch of your body where you need it most
• Hand-tufted wool rosettes secure layers without the use of adhesives that might block airflow. 6 upholstered handles to easily move or adjust your bed without the hassle
• CertiPUR-US Certified free of unhealthy chemicals, including harmful fire retardants, phthalates, and heavy metals. 25-year limited warranty

It’s important to note that the queen size weighs 113 lbs. Considering the average queen size boxed mattress I receive is around 65 lbs, this is quite a step up.

How Much Does the Brentwood Home Oceano Mattress Cost?

My Oceano Findings

I’ve never been a big fan of micro coils. Usually, they just don’t do anything. They usually completely collapse and do nothing to provide support or bounce. However, Brentwood got it right this time. The micro-coils in the Oceano create a contouring support that helps you float on the mattress while still giving you a nice hug. This is exactly how a euro-top should feel. The coils help the top recover faster and provide superior pressure relief than a simple foam euro-top. You also won’t get pulled into the middle with your partner half-way through the night like some of the cheaper euro top mattresses.

Here’s a clip illustrating the bounce on the Oceano. It has good bounce without much motion transfer. The pocket coils isolate movement because they all work independently and the foam also absorbs quite a bit of energy. Added to that, the tufting on the mattress further lessens motion transfer. The 4-way stretch fabric on the top of the mattress won’t pull from the other side of the mattress either. It’s a lot of little things that make a big difference.

This mattress is hand-tufted. Not only does this make the mattress look great but it also helps with breathability by creating small channels for air to circulate while you sleep. The tufting method also eliminated the need for glue. Instead, the threads keep all the material in place which makes for a more natural mattress.

Speaking of natural, because this mattress uses springs as a base layer instead of a foam layer, it is more eco-friendly. Foam bases use much more fossil fuels than coil systems. Additionally, coil systems are more breathable and sleep cooler than their foam counterparts.

Below is a picture of the mattress right after unboxing. The small wrinkles eventually go away, this is due to it being compressed in a box. Notice the tufting and the stitched handles which are available on all sides of the mattress. Brentwood also uses furniture-grade upholstery for the border.

Here’s what it looks like after a couple days.

This mattress also has great edge support. The Oceano has an 8-inch 5-zone Quantum®Edge Combi-Zone® Coil System from Leggett & Platt. This is a pocket coil system that was designed for great edge support so you won’t feel like you’re going to roll off the mattress. Here’s a description of the system from the manufacturer:

Quantum® Edge forms a frame around select ComfortCore® units, providing a better edge than foam, reducing or eliminating that roll-off feeling, and delivering a consistent sleep surface.

• Proven 26% more durable than foam encasements.
• On adjustable bases, Quantum Edge bends an average of 24% easier than foam encasements, which means less wear and tear on moving parts.

Here’s a picture of the Quantum Edge corner. Notice the perimeter of smaller, firmer coils around the edge to provide extra support.

My Brentwood Home Oceano Recommendation

A queen size Oceano retails for $1,495 which is an excellent value considering all the features of this mattress. You would be hard-pressed to find a better mattress at this price point.

Brentwood Home exudes the laid-back California vibe. It is both elegant and comfortable. Brentwood makes all their mattresses factory-direct in Los Angeles and they take pride in what they do. Luxury does not have to mean expensive and Brentwood has proven that with their flagship mattress, the Oceano.
